Gapless boundary excitations in the quantum Hall states and in the chiral spin states.

Using the gauge invariances, we show that the (fractional and integral) Quantum Hall (QH) states and the chiral spin states must have gapless boundary excitations. The dynamical properties of those gapless excitations are studied. Under some general assumptions, the gapless excitations are shown to form a representation of the U(1) or SU(2) Kac-Moody algebras and to contribute to a specific heat with a linear temperature dependence. The low energy effective theories for those gapless excitations are derived. The quantum numbers of the gapless boundary excitations are also discussed. In particular, the charge zero sector of the low lying boundary excitations in the fractional QH states are shown to be described by the charge zero sector of free fermions with fractional

Edge states in graphene: from gapped flat-band to gapless chiral modes.
We study edge states in graphene systems where a bulk energy gap is opened by inversion symmetry breaking. We find that the edge bands dispersion can be controlled by potentials applied on the boundary with unit cell length scale. Under certain boundary potentials, gapless edge states with valley-dependent velocity are found, exactly analogous to the spin-dependent gapless chiral edge states in...
متن کاملTopological spinon semimetals and gapless boundary states in three dimensions.
Recently, there has been much effort in understanding topological phases of matter with gapless bulk excitations, which are characterized by topological invariants and protected intrinsic boundary states. Here we show that topological semimetals of Majorana fermions arise in exactly solvable Kitaev spin models on a series of three-dimensional lattices. The ground states of these models are quan...
متن کاملSymmetry-protected quantum spin Hall phases in two dimensions.
Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states are short-range entangled states with symmetry. Nontrivial SPT states have symmetry-protected gapless edge excitations. In 2 dimension (2D), there are an infinite number of nontrivial SPT phases with SU(2) or SO(3) symmetry. These phases can be described by SU(2) or SO(3) nonlinear-sigma models with a quantized topological θ term. At an open boundary,...
متن کاملEmergence of nontrivial magnetic excitations in a spin-liquid state of kagomé volborthite.
When quantum fluctuations destroy underlying long-range ordered states, novel quantum states emerge. Spin-liquid (SL) states of frustrated quantum antiferromagnets, in which highly correlated spins fluctuate down to very low temperatures, are prominent examples of such quantum states. SL states often exhibit exotic physical properties, but the precise nature of the elementary excitations behind...
متن کاملGapped and gapless spin liquid phases on the Kagome lattice from chiral three-spin interactions
We argue that a relatively simple model containing only SU(2)-invariant chiral three-spin interactions on a Kagome lattice of S = 1/2 spins can give rise to both a gapped and a gapless quantum spin liquid. Our arguments are rooted in a formulation in terms of network models of edge states and are backed up by a careful numerical analysis. For a uniform choice of chirality on the lattice, we rea...
